It is impossible to predict when exactly American life will return to normal, if ever at all. The virus has exposed serious weaknesses in our government’s ability to respond to such a disaster and Americans have been forced to re-evaluate their values and priorities. Eventually travel and business restrictions will be lifted, however, it seems obvious that both the free market and legislators must seriously consider how to prevent and prepare for the next viral outbreak or general disaster. Where capital is invested in the future will be a hot topic of conversation once the smoke clears. How employers operate and consumers purchase will also change. The homeless are already an extremely at-risk demographic for this plague. Many have compromised immune systems. Many have other pre-existing conditions. Due to warrants, mental health issues, drug-use, and lack of resources, many will not seek treatment even if they begin to show symptoms of the virus. As many public and open-to-the-public spaces continue to be shut down, Alcoholics Anonymous (and similar groups) will struggle to find meeting locations… Add the lack of meetings available to the increasingly-worse economy and social isolation, and we are set up for an explosion of relapses. It’s no secret that the food industry is struggling right now. In many cities and states there are requirements that forbid dine-in eating. This has been causing a lot of issues with restaurants not able to get the customers they need to keep their doors open, which has led to the layoff (some temporary, some not) of too many wait staff and cooks to count.
